Mechanical Assembly Rules & Interface Identification
Critical mechanical rules for assembling JIC 37°, ORFS, and SAE O-Ring Boss connections without joint failure or fluid contamination.
A -8 JIC nut and a -8 SAE ORB port stud both utilize identical 3/4-16 UNF straight threads. However, JIC seals metal-to-metal on a 37° internal flare cone, whereas ORB seals via an elastomeric O-ring against an internal port chamfer. Never force incompatible interfaces together or apply nut torque to port studs.
Conical (JIC 37°), flat-face (ORFS), and straight-thread boss (ORB) joints seal via machined surfaces or captive O-rings—not through thread interference. Applying PTFE tape or paste prevents proper mechanical seating, damages threads, and shreds into hydraulic oil, jamming spool valves and proportional solenoids.
When connecting steel tube fittings into aluminum hydraulic manifold blocks, the port threads yield at significantly lower shear stress than the steel nut. Never apply carbon steel tightening values to aluminum ports without specific manufacturer derating tables.
Flats From Wrench Resistance (FFWR) is an engineered alternative assembly method when a calibrated torque wrench cannot access a crowded valve manifold. Never perform FFWR after achieving target torque; combining both will yield extreme over-tightening and flare cracking.

Torque Calculation Methodology & Technical Review Gate
Why engineering lookup requires manufacturer-verified datasets rather than arbitrary mathematical multipliers.
Many informal workshop guides claim that lubricated torque is always exactly 75% of dry torque. However, empirical Tribology research from Bossard Fastener Friction Testing demonstrates that the coefficient of friction (μ) varies widely between 0.08 and 0.25 depending on surface plating (zinc, cadmium, black oxide), base substrate, and lubricant viscosity.
Software that blindly applies a 0.75 factor only tests an arithmetic assumption, not mechanical truth. Rigovely strictly requires matching the exact lubrication condition stated in the manufacturer assembly table.
Unit conversions are executed with full floating-point precision before rounding to legible display values:
- 1 lbf·ft = 1.3558179483314004 N·m
- 1 lbf·in = 0.1129848290276167 N·m
- N·m → lbf·ft = N·m / 1.3558179483314004
Flats From Wrench Resistance (FFWR) is maintained as a discrete angle method and is never pseudo-converted to torque.
Under our technical policy, every dataset row must link to a primary OEM or standard organization publication with documented publisher, catalog revision, table locator, and independent reviewer sign-off.
When a manufacturer catalog is in pending_review status, numeric torque recommendations are withheld to prevent equipment damage.
